Dr. Ken Hollis

Dr. Ken Hollis"I've always wanted to be a doctor," says Dr. Ken Hollis. "And not just any doctor. I wanted to be the doctor's doctor - a surgeon. My father's best friend was a physician and I remember going to his office and looking around and thinking to myself, 'This is what I want to do.'  I wanted to be able to put science to work to help people. And in my mind I always pictured a doctor as being in the operating room performing surgery."

Dr. Hollis was born in California in 1954. As the son of an Air Force pilot, his family moved fairly frequently: elementary school in California and Kansas, junior high school in France, high school in Germany and Maine. And then after finishing high school, Dr. Hollis moved back to Kansas.

Dr. Hollis entered college at Washburn University in Kansas where he completed his undergraduate studies, earning degrees in both chemistry and biology with minors in math and languages. In addition, it was there that he started his research in immunology, specifically investigating the reasons for transplant rejection and techniques for preventing that rejection. Dr. Hollis entered the University of Kansas for his graduate studies, where he continued his immunology research, and eventually obtained his medical degree in 1979.

Dr. Hollis completed his residency in 1984 at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kansas.  After a one-year private practice experience in south central Maine, he re-entered training as a fellow in trauma surgery and critical care in Baltimore, Maryland.  He completed this additional training and then re-entered private practice in Wichita, Kansas specializing in trauma and critical care.  "Big hospital practice and university professorship was a stimulating and rewarding experience, and great experience for a young doctor, but long term I saw myself more as a community surgeon," explains Dr. Hollis.  "Mainstream community practice seemed more my style," he added.

After very careful consideration, Dr. Hollis moved to Houston in 1993 and founded BayChoice Surgeons. "This community was just what I was looking for.  The economy is stable, there is good local hospital support, the people are friendly, and the climate is such that I can enjoy outdoor activities with my family on a year round basis."

Dr. Hollis currently lives in Clear Lake with his wife and three children. During his leisure time, he enjoys tinkering in his workshop and playing his guitar. And during his professional hours, Dr. Hollis does what he has always wanted to do. He puts science to work to help people.
