Evening Primrose Oil
"Flower Power-A Natural Breakthrough!"
(oenothera biennis)

General Description: A biennial herb, it is common in North America where it can be seen growing alongside the road. It used to be gathered and eaten for food by Native Americans.

Dosage: 1,000 mg per day

Active Ingredients: (GLA) Gammalinolenic acid and Linoleic acid.

Descriptions &. Uses: Evening Primrose oil contains the highest amount of vital gammalinoleic acid (GLA) of any food substance. GLA is an essential fatty acid not manufactured by the body. This fatty acid is known to help prevent hardening of the arteries, heart disease, premenstrual syndrome, multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure and sore breasts. It has a positive effect on sex hormone response including the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Research also demonstrates that Primrose oil helps relieve pain and inflammation. It has been effective in treating cirrhosis of the liver. A lack of GLA may lead to a dysfunctional level of prostaglandins.

The essential fatty acids found in Primrose oil have desirable effects on many disorders. Found in high concentrations in the brain, fatty acids aid transmission of nerve impulses and are needed for normal brain function. GLA is also important for healthy skin by restoring the fat and moisture necessary for skin balance. GLA encourages circulation, which results in more nutrients, and oxygen delivery to skin cells especially surface cells where dry skin is most apparent. GLA helps to strengthen cell walls and boost skin immunity. Unfortunately, the ability to make and
metabolize GLA slows with age. Diabetes, alcohol, illness, stress, viral infections, vitamin deficiencies also interfere with GLA production. Studies show that increasing the intake of essential fatty acids can improve or alleviate the above conditions.

Precautions: There are no known contraindications or drug interactions reported.

Availability &. Cost: Primrose oil is available at your local drugstore in the vitamin section. Prices vary per quantity and milligrams.
