Post Breast Biopsy Instructions

1. You may resume your diet and medications following the biopsy unless instructed differently.

2. A sedative was given during the biopsy so you may or may not remember much before, during, or after the biopsy. This is a normal reaction to the medication. For this reason, we recommend a follow up appointment be made for a week after the biopsy area. This will allow the physician to review the pathology reports and examine the biopsy area. This follow up appointment may be made today prior to leaving the office. Because a sedative was used, we recommend that you plan to go home and rest after the biopsy. Please do not attempt to drive or operate machinery for several hours.

3. You may remove the dressing(s) the evening of or the day after the biopsy. For comfort, we recommend using pads (i.e. sanitary napkins) between the biopsy area and clothing.

4. Take prescribed pain medications as ordered. Heat may also be used for pain relief. You may shower or bathe as usual the day after the biopsy. Please wear a bra which is snug for a week after the biopsy. This should be worn day and night.

5. Please notify our office if you experience excessive pain, redness, swelling, or warmth at the biopsy site.
