Post Operative Rectal Surgery Instructions

  1. Remove dressing later the same day.

  2. Start warm tub bath every 4 hours and after bowel movements. One may purchase a commercial device for such purposes, although we recommend simply sitting in a regular bathtub with 6 inches of very warm water for 15-20 minutes each time. Gently agitate the water to get the rectal area as clean as possible. Pat area dry with a clean, soft towel afterwards and leave dry dressing in place. Gauze works fine, but a feminine napkin (for example, a Kotex pad) really works better and is usually cheaper.

  3. Use Tucks pads frequently as needed, especially when itching occurs or after bowel movements. This is available without a prescription at your pharmacy.

  4. Use Nupercainal ointment frequently as needed for control of pain. This is a non-prescription pain medication.

  5. Use prescription pain pills only as needed. Try and switch as early as possible to plain Tylenol or aspirin to lessen problems with extended usage of prescription pain medications.

  6. Take one teaspoon Metamucil (or equivalent) in large glass of water or juice three times daily for one month. Metamucil is available without a prescription from your pharmacy. After the first month, you may want to continue with a lesser dose of Metamucil, or you may consider a daily meal of bran cereal along with plenty of fluids to over come constipation. This helps lessen the likelihood of recurrence.

  7. You may take a mild laxative for constipation. Milk of Magnesia is preferred over other stronger laxatives. One ounce daily is the maximum dose. Contact out office for persistent constipation.

  8. Avoid lifting or straining for 2 weeks after surgery. You may work on limited activity. Have your employer call our office for any questions or needed documentation.

  9. You should be seen in follow up at 1 to 2 weeks post-operative and again in one month. We will be available for additional visits if problems ensue. Remember, there is no additional charge for routine post- operative visits within the procedure's global period, so do not hesitate to call us for problems.

  10. It has been our pleasure to care for you. If you have any questions or problems, feel free to contact us. After hours or for emergencies, contact your physician at one of the telephone numbers listed below for your convenience.
